This classic farm style reclaimed dining table is a beautiful example of something we do well here at Cannon Hill – take a simple design and elevate it. Built from reclaimed oak, this table has relatively less of the “character” inherent in that material, and intentional decision we and our clients made together for a specific reason. Our custom wood furniture is all about making thoughtful choices for articulable reasons, and we believe that leads to a better product in every way.
“Reclaimed” material is lumber that has previously been used, typically in the framing of buildings, and has been salvaged during the demolition or renovation. While the demolition process is underway builders will set aside the old posts, beams, joists, and studs for re-use, saving the perfectly usable wood for an entirely new purpose. We love reclaimed material because it allows us to prolong the lifespan of long-ago felled trees – there’s no reason at all why this material should make its way into a landfill when we can give it a new lease on life in a wood dining table like this one. Reclaimed lumber has a beautiful patina typically characterized by pre-existing nail holes, aged grain, and the comparatively rougher milling processes of years gone by.

In reclaimed material, some quantity of dings, cracks, and knots is inevitable – and, in fact, exactly the desired design effect – so we shoot for a slightly less visual uniformity in favor of more character and a more rustic appearance. In this dining table, though, our clients didn’t want too rustic a look, because their interiors are clean and sophisticated. As you can see, they were completely right. We achieved the right balance by milling through a little more of that character than we otherwise might have. What you get is a custom dining table that’s decidedly vintage, but certainly not rough-looking; it’s a table that has a personality, and also a distinct refinement.
This table uses a traditional corner-leg construction with tapered legs and skirt, which also contribute to that feeling. This style of dining table has a long history here in New England, and we’re proud to continue that heritage. As on all the furniture we make, things like proportionality make a huge difference, and we go to great lengths to get them just right. A corner leg layout like this one is great because it allows for the ample seating to be tucked all the way inside the footprint of the table when it’s not in use. Our proprietary table extension system makes seating for large groups a breeze, without committing our clients to an enormous dining table on all those days when they don’t need one. Like everything we do, it’s all about striking a thoughtful balance that serves the client’s life and home.
