Custom Sipo Dining Table in Chatham

Custom Sipo Dining Table in Chatham

An important part of what we do here at Cannon Hill is to think about how to bring our clients’ visions to life, even if those visions aren’t yet fully formed, in exciting and surprising ways. A custom dining table ought to reflect the client’s taste, refracted through our years of experience and expertise.

The wood species on this project is Sipo, a relative of mahogany that offers many of the same visual qualities – deep reddish-brown color, attractive grain patterns, beautiful ribbon-striping – as that more famous species. We love building custom tables out of Sipo because of its beauty and because of what a joy it is to work. The way that the various mahogany cousins catch and reflect light is mesmerizing, and they look fantastic in all sorts of interior designs.

Mahogany is perhaps most often associated with very traditional styles of furniture, and for good reason. It has a proud place in furnituremaking going back a long way, and is well known for its use in those classic, detailed styles. A dining table like that, though, simply wouldn’t have looked at home in this space. So we turned to one of our favorite ways to give a table a punch of more modern energy.

We love using steel bases on our custom dining tables because they allow us to bring any number of design elements together, in completely custom styles. Our skilled steel fabricator works with our clients to bring virtually any idea to life, and Cannon Hill brings years and years of experience to bear to ensure that the marriage between table and base matches our clients’ vision.

Steel bases offer an entirely different look than the more traditional pedestal and trestle bases that are so familiar to us. Because steel is so strong, we can integrate designs into our tables that might not be practical in wood. Often, these designs lend a table a more minimal look, allowing light to flow around and through them. Thus, we often like to use metal bases in bright, airy rooms like this one — to allow the space to really breathe.

We delivered this table to our clients’ home in Chatham, MA, a beautiful Cape Cod town where a number of our pieces now live. We’ll hand deliver our custom tables anywhere on the Cape, from Pocasset to Provincetown, and we have trusted shipping partners for deliveries to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. Of course, we have tables throughout New England and beyond; we hand deliver within four hours of Boston, and ship nationwide. It’s a nice feeling knowing that, right now, there are families sitting down to supper in Stowe, VT, New York City, and Memphis, TN around a Cannon Hill table.
